Level I -- Anton Nagorski and Katherine Pankiewicz

The First Family arrived in the United States by passenger ship in May 1892 and was processed at the immigration center at Ellis Island in New York Harbor. The family members included Anton Nagorski, his wife Katherine, their four daughters (oldest to youngest) Micheline, Albina, Josephine, and Felicia (Fay), and his mother Anna. The best information we have is that they were ethnic Polish from the Grodno area near Bialystok. Grodno was and is a major city now located in Belarus, while Bialystok remains in Poland. The country of Poland did not officially exist during the entire 1800s, but regained its independence in 1918. On U.S. Census forms during the early decades of the 1900s the first family members were required to give “modern” name equivalent for the country of birth. They all said “Poland”.

*Variations: Kathe, Catherine, Katarzyna (Polish). The 1940 Census spells her name “Catherine Nagorski”. The State of Connecticut Death Records has her name spelled “Kathe Nagorski” which most likely a shortened version of Katherine that she was know by informally. The Polish version Catherine is Katarzyna. Her gravestone reads “Katherine Nagorski”. Her brother’s name was Konstanty Pankiewicz. It is possible the Census take in 1940 just wrote it down at “Catherine” and did not bother to ask if it was spelled with a “C’ or a “K”.
